Infocomm 2012 offered a multitude of interesting new digital signage products. For example, display products are getting larger…and smaller. As digital signage expands its reach, there is an increased demand for small screens.There are more products operating on the Android operating system, which brings the experience to new applications. Digital signage in the cloud is increasingly becoming a part of the industry’s offerings. Here are a few “must sees.”
Many new kinds of displays and display systems are making their way into the market. Video wall technology is evolving, making them less expensive and more flexible. There will be more industrialized small monitors for use as room signs and shelf displays, designed for 24/7 operation. Displays with built-in processors in all sizes are also becoming more common. Because much of digital signage runs 24/7 more products are being developed for that kind of demand. A few highlights you will see:
Video Wall Technology
As video walls become more popular, there are more manufacturers entering the arena.There is one new technology that is making the cost more affordable and the operation more flexible. Hiperwall is a software-based processor that takes the place of a hardware processor.It is a software program developed at University California Irvine, and runs on an ordinary consumer computer.
To build a Hiperwall system, the user needs monitors with their own individual processor, either built in or external.Each monitor gets its signal from an Ethernet cable, rather than a DVI or VGA cable used by traditional video wall systems. A basic Ethernet switch takes the signal and routes it to each monitor.According to Jeff Greenberg, CEO of Hiperwall, it’s more than just a video wall, it’s distributed visualization. With Hiperwall, the user can create an image on a wall of monitors or a series of monitors in multiple locations. It can take the cost of a video wall down from 25 to 50 percent.Hiperwall is the only company currently offering this technology.
Large LED screens are constantly being improved. As LED boards become more affordable, they are being placed in many new applications. A drawback to LED boards is the distance and viewing angles. An improvement that is being introduced is by a company called SiliconCore. Their technology, a first in the industry, uses a specially designed chip that offers a 1.9mm resolution. This takes the viewing distance down to 4 feet with no viewing angle issues.
